Mehdi Tavakoli, MD, is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist specializing in neuro-ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, and adult strabismus and oculoplastic. He completed his medical school and residency in ophthalmology and fellowship in oculoplastic in Iran, and he was a faculty in one of the top nation’s hospitals before moving to the United States.
At the University of Miami Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Tavakoli completed two years of research scholarship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery and two clinical fellowships in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus, and neuro-ophthalmology. He then joined the faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2019, before joiningthe George Washington University and Medical Faculty Associates in 2022.
Tavakoli has published more than 60 peer-review articles and book chapters, and is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, North American Neuro-ophthalmology Society, and American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. He treats conditions affecting the optic nerve and visual pathways in children and adults, orbital disorders, eyelid disorders, and strabismus (eye squint). He performs functional and cosmetic eyelid surgeries, orbital and strabismus surgeries, and Botox injections for facial wrinkles, facial/eyelid spasms, and migraines.
