Maria Elena Ruiz, MD is an esteemed Associate Professor of Medicine at The George Washington University and a leading expert in infectious diseases. With over two decades of experience in the field, Dr. Ruiz has dedicated her career to advancing the understanding and treatment of complex infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients.

Dr. Ruiz's academic journey began at George Washington University, where she earned undergraduate degrees in Zoology and Psychology, followed by her Doctor of Medicine degree from the GWU School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the George Washington University Medical Center, where she trained under distinguished mentors in the field.

In her current roles, Dr. Ruiz serves as the Director of Epidemiology at The George Washington University Hospital and the Director of the Travel Clinic at the GWU Medical Faculty Associates. Her leadership in these positions is marked by her commitment to improving patient outcomes through innovative infection control practices and comprehensive care strategies.

Dr. Ruiz is also deeply committed to medical education and mentorship.
