Dr. Michael G. Knight & Dr. Ginger Winston Receive Certification by the American Board of Obesity Medicine as ABOM diplomats
Michael G. Knight MD, MSHP and Ginger Winston, MD, MPH have been certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) as ABOM diplomates. ABOM diplomates are physicians who undergo rigorous training and an extensive examination process to achieve this designation.
The American Board of Obesity Medicine serves the public and the field of obesity medicine by maintaining standards for assessment and credentialing physicians. Certification as an ABOM diplomate signifies specialized knowledge in the practice of obesity medicine and distinguishes a physician as having achieved competency in obesity care. ABOM collaborates with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) to administer the annual credentialing exam. Currently, there are more than 2,650 ABOM diplomates throughout the United States and Canada.
Michael G. Knight, MD, MSHP is an Internal Medicine physician and the Patient Safety Officer at The GW Medical Faculty Associates, and Assistant Professor of Medicine at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC. Dr. Knight completed undergraduate studies at Oakwood University, and obtained his medical degree with special qualifications in biomedical research from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. During medical school, he participated in the year-long Clinical Research Training Program at the National Institutes of Health, where his research focused on metabolic disease and obesity in women of African descent. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine, with special training in obesity medicine, at New York Presbyterian – Weill Cornell Medical Center. He subsequently completed a Masters in Health Policy Research as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Knight is board certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine, and currently practices clinically with a focus in Obesity Medicine in the GW Weight Loss Clinic and General Internal Medicine Practice. He is an active member, and has served on various committees, of The Obesity Society and the Obesity Medicine Association, and has been an invited speaker on obesity and its effect in ethnic minority communities on radio, in news media, and at various medical and community events internationally and throughout the United States.
Ginger Winston, MD, MPH is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates and the GW Milken Institute of Public Health. She is an internal medicine physician and clinical researcher. Dr. Winston completed her medical education at the New York University School of Medicine. She then completed a fellowship in General Medicine at Columbia University where she earned a Masters in Public Health from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Dr. Winston’s research focuses on behavioral interventions aimed to reduce the prevalence of obesity, with an emphasis on the role of social networks in promoting weight loss. She was the recipient of an Investigator Research Supplement award from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NIH) to investigate the relationship between social network characteristics and weight loss in the ‘Small Changes and Lasting Effects’ (SCALE) behavior change weight loss study. Her most recent research has examined the feasibility of incorporating child support in a behavior change weight loss intervention among parents with obesity.
The GW Medical Faculty Associates Weight Loss Clinic operates within the Division of General Internal Medicine, and is staffed by four physicians, a nurse practitioner, dietician and a physician who works on stress reduction and mindfulness. Providers at the clinic work with patients to achieve medical weight reduction through an individualized approach that may include nutrition, physical activity, behavior change, or medications.
